Backpacks vs duffle bags: which should a fight gym or brand order?

Gym bags are one of the easiest products to put your logo on, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here is what to specify, what it costs and how to choose between a backpack and a duffle.

In short

Choose a backpack (about 30 to 35 L, $14 to $22 FOB) for members who commute on foot, by bike or by train. Choose a duffle (about 45 to 55 L, $15 to $24 FOB) for fighters who carry a full camp kit by car. Both come in 600D polyester with PU coating, a ventilated glove or shoe section and a molded TPR logo patch. MOQ is 30 pieces per colourway, with a sample before bulk.

Most fight gyms reach a point where members ask for club merch beyond t-shirts. A branded bag is a good next step. It is used every session, it is seen on the street and it lasts for years. The question is which format to order first, and how to write a spec that a factory can quote without guessing.

Backpack or duffle: the short version

A backpack suits members who travel on foot, by bike or on public transport. It keeps the hands free and fits gloves, wraps, a towel and a change of clothes. A duffle suits fighters and coaches who drive to training or camp, and who carry shin guards, headgear and several pairs of gloves at once.

Many gyms order both. A backpack becomes the everyday member bag, and a duffle becomes the fight team or coach bag. If you only order one, look at how your members arrive. City gyms tend to sell more backpacks. Suburban gyms with parking tend to sell more duffles.

What to put in your spec

1. Capacity

Capacity is the first number a buyer should fix. A 30 to 35 L backpack holds a pair of 16 oz gloves, wraps, a towel and clothes. A 45 to 55 L duffle adds shin guards, headgear and a second pair of gloves. Going bigger than you need adds cost and makes the bag look empty on the shelf.

2. Ventilated glove or shoe compartment

This is the feature fight gym members care about most. Wet gloves sealed in the main section make everything smell. On our backpacks the glove or shoe section sits at the bottom with its own zip and mesh venting. On the duffles it is an end pocket. Ask for it by name in your spec so it is not left off a quote.

3. Fabric denier

Denier is the weight of the yarn. 600D polyester is lighter and a little softer. 900D is heavier and holds a firmer shape. Both get a PU coating on the back for water resistance. For a retail backpack that sits on a shelf, 900D gives a crisper look. For a club duffle that gets thrown in a car boot every day, 600D is usually enough.

4. Logo: molded TPR patch

Our bags use a molded TPR patch, about 50 mm, made from your logo. It is raised, flexible and stitched in place, so it does not crack or peel like a print on coated fabric. Send vector artwork and your colour references, and the patch is checked on the sample.

5. Colourway

The new collection comes in 10 colourways. Darker options such as the Obsidian Gold fight gym backpack and the Midnight Silver private label backpack hide dirt well and suit most club logos. Brighter options such as the Cobalt Volt youth boxing backpack work well for junior programs.

Bags for private-label brands

If you run a fight brand rather than a gym, the bag is a retail product, not a member perk. That changes a few choices. Pick a colourway that matches your gloves so the range looks planned. Ask for your own labels and packaging, which we include as part of private label. Order the sample in the exact colourway you will sell, so your product photos match the bulk.

Brands often pair a backpack with matching gloves. For example, the Obsidian Gold pro boxing gloves sit well next to the matching backpack and duffle. Browse the boxing gloves range or the wider fightwear collection to build a full line.

How costs add up

The FOB price covers the bag, your TPR patch and packing at our factory in Sialkot. On top of that you pay freight to your country, import duty and import VAT or sales tax. For 30 to 60 bags, courier by DHL, UPS or FedEx is common and simple. For larger orders, air or sea freight can lower the cost per piece. Ask us to quote both so you can compare.

Three things move the FOB price most: 900D fabric instead of 600D, the larger duffle size, and extra pockets or trims. Keep the first order simple, then add features once you know what sells.

Ordering steps

  1. Send the style, colourway, quantity and your logo file.
  2. Get an indicative FOB quote and approve a sample, made in about 2 weeks.
  3. Check size, venting, zips and the TPR patch on the sample.
  4. Approve bulk. Production takes 3 to 4 weeks, then shipping.

The full process is on our how to order page. Our factory is ISO 9001:2015 certified; details are on the certifications page. For a quote, email Sales@Blackthorn-textile.com or WhatsApp +92-332-832-8802.

FAQ

What is the minimum order for custom gym bags?

The minimum is 30 pieces per colourway for both backpacks and duffle bags. You can split an order across styles, for example 30 backpacks and 30 duffles, as long as each colourway reaches 30. A pre-production sample is made first so you can check size, logo and stitching.

How much does a private-label fight gym backpack cost?

Indicative FOB prices run from $14 to $22 per backpack and $15 to $24 per duffle, depending on fabric, size and trims. Prices are tentative until the sample is approved. Freight, import duty and import VAT or sales tax are extra and depend on your country.

Is 900D fabric better than 600D for a gym bag?

900D polyester uses a heavier yarn, so it feels stiffer and resists scuffing better. 600D is lighter and softer, and it holds shape well for most daily gym use. Both get a PU coating. Pick 900D for a retail backpack that needs a firm look; 600D suits most club and duffle orders.

How is the logo applied to the bags?

Bags carry a molded TPR patch, about 50 mm, made from your artwork. TPR is a rubber-like material that is raised, flexible and easy to wipe clean. It is stitched on, so it does not peel the way a print can on coated fabric. The patch is confirmed on your sample.

How long does a bag order take?

Plan on about 2 weeks for the sample, then 3 to 4 weeks for bulk production after you approve it. Shipping time comes on top: courier by DHL, UPS or FedEx is fastest, and sea freight is slower but cheaper for large cartons.
