Private label ski jacket manufacturing: specs, MOQ and 2027 FOB prices
A ski jacket is the most technical garment most apparel brands and distributors will put their label on. Get the membrane, seams or zips wrong and the returns arrive after the first wet day on the mountain. This guide is for product, sourcing and procurement teams briefing a private label ski jacket program: what to specify, what drives the FOB price, and how a ski order runs with Blackthorn World.

In short
Private label ski jackets from Blackthorn World cost roughly $28–$55 per piece indicative FOB, with ski pants and bibs at about $20–$38 and matching jacket-and-pant sets at $45–$85. The minimum is 50 pieces per style, sizes mixed. Waterproof and breathability ratings, seam taping and YKK zips are built to your brief and confirmed on the pre-production sample, which takes about 2 weeks; bulk follows in 3–4 weeks after approval.
1. Start with waterproof and breathability ratings
Two numbers define a ski shell, and your tech pack should state both:
- Waterproofness (hydrostatic head, mm). How much water pressure the fabric resists before it leaks. As a common industry benchmark, around 10,000 mm suits most resort skiing, while 15,000–20,000 mm and above is typical for premium, freeride and wet-climate ranges.
- Breathability (g/m²/24h, MVTR). How much moisture vapor escapes. Around 10,000 g/m²/24h is a common resort level; touring and high-output ranges usually ask for more.
Higher ratings mean a more expensive membrane or laminate, so match the spec to the end user. A ski school whose instructors stand on the slope all day needs a different balance from a freeride brand. Construction matters too: a 2-layer shell with a hanging lining is the usual choice for insulated resort jackets, while 3-layer laminates suit shells and touring. At Blackthorn World the shell is polyester or nylon with a waterproof, breathable membrane and a water-repellent (DWR) finish; the exact rating is set to your brief and confirmed with your quote and sample.
2. Seams, zips and the details buyers check
Ratings only hold if water can't get in through the construction.
- Seam taping. Fully taped seams seal every seam; critical taping seals only the shoulders, hood and neck. Fully taped is the safer default for a brand's core line.
- Zips. Our ski jackets use waterproof YKK zippers. Name the exact YKK line and puller style on the tech pack so reorders match.
- Snow features. Powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, high collar, wrist gaiters and cuff tabs, as on our custom alpine ski jacket. Pit zips and a goggle pocket can be added.
- Pockets and cut. Chest, hand and sleeve pass pockets for lift cards. A snowboard cut is longer and more relaxed: see the custom snowboard jacket.
3. Insulation, lining and fit
Decide early whether the jacket is a shell, insulated or a hybrid. Synthetic insulation keeps its warmth when damp and is the usual choice for resort and staff wear; down baffles appear more often in après and lifestyle ranges (see our puffer and down jackets). A hybrid insulated ski jacket combines insulated body panels with stretch side panels for movement.
For fit, specify the cut (athletic, regular or relaxed snowboard), the size range and any youth sizes. Patterns are made and graded on Gerber AccuMark, so proportions stay consistent from XS to 3XL and from one season's reorder to the next.
4. Branding a private label ski range
Decoration is done in-house: embroidery, screen and heat transfer, silicone/TPR badges and woven labels. Ski jackets are usually branded with embroidery or reflective heat transfer on the chest and sleeve, TPR zip pullers, and woven neck and care labels carrying your brand. Hang tags and polybag labeling can be set up to suit your warehouse or retail partner. Send vector artwork with Pantone references, plus fabric color standards so shell, trims and tape match.
5. Indicative 2027 FOB prices
| Product | Typical build | Indicative FOB per piece |
|---|---|---|
| Custom alpine ski jacket | Insulated shell, powder skirt, helmet hood | $28–$55 |
| Custom snowboard jacket | Longer relaxed cut, cargo pockets | $28–$55 |
| Custom ski pants | Waterproof pant, zipped hand and thigh pockets | $20–$38 |
| Custom snowboard bib pants | High chest bib, adjustable straps | $20–$38 |
| Ski jacket and bib set | Matching jacket and bib, taped seams | $45–$85 |
| Ski instructor uniform | Jacket and pants with kick patches | $45–$85 |
Ranges are per piece in USD, indicative FOB, starting at the 50-piece minimum per style; the low end reflects larger volumes. Freight, duty and taxes are extra. Your final price depends on membrane rating, insulation, taping, trims and quantity. Development samples are charged per style plus courier and credited against your first bulk order.
6. MOQ, lead times and planning the season
- MOQ: 50 pieces per style, sizes mixed. A style is one construction and colorway.
- Pre-production sample: about 2 weeks from tech pack and artwork sign-off.
- Bulk production: 3–4 weeks after sample approval, then air or sea freight.
Ski is a seasonal category, so work back from your in-store or hand-out date. Allow for extra sampling rounds on technical fabrics and for sea freight, and lock fabric and color standards at the sample stage so reorders match. Capacity is 150,000+ garments a month on 200+ stitching machines, which leaves room for distributor and multi-resort programs.
Duty note: Blackthorn World is an EU REX registered exporter, so EU importers may qualify for GSP+ preferences and UK importers for DCTS. Ski jackets and suits usually fall under HS headings 6201/6202 or 6211.20 depending on construction. Confirm classification and duty with your customs broker.
