Hi-vis reflective rain jackets: how to spec a waterproof, high-visibility jacket for road, rail and site crews
A hi-vis rain jacket has to do two jobs at once: keep a worker dry for a full shift and stay visible in the dark and the rain. Here is what to specify so it does both.

In short
A private-label hi-vis rain jacket combines a waterproof shell (PU-coated polyester or a breathable membrane, with taped seams) with fluorescent background fabric and retro-reflective tape. Relevant standards are EN 343 for rain protection and EN ISO 20471 or ANSI/ISEA 107 for visibility. Blackthorn World makes them from 50 pieces per style and about $15 per jacket FOB.

Which shell fabric: PU coating or breathable membrane?
| PU-coated polyester | Breathable membrane / laminate | |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproofing | High | High |
| Breathability | Low — gets clammy in active work | Medium to high |
| Best for | Short wear, visitors, low-activity roles, budget programmes | All-day wear, rail, road and utility crews |
| Price | Lowest | Higher |
Whatever the fabric, the jacket is only as waterproof as its seams. Specify fully taped seams, a storm flap over the zip and a hood that fits over a hard hat if your crews wear one.
Which standards apply?
- EN 343 — protection against rain, rated for water penetration resistance and breathability (classes 1–4 in the current version).
- EN ISO 20471 — visibility classes 1–3 in Europe, the UK, the Gulf and many other markets.
- ANSI/ISEA 107 — visibility Class 2 or 3 in the USA and Canada; most hi-vis rain jackets with sleeves are designed to reach Class 3.
Certification is done per design at an accredited lab. We use certified reflective tape when a certified garment is required and arrange the testing on request.
Features buyers ask for
- Concealed or roll-away hood, hard-hat compatible.
- Two-tone designs — fluorescent yellow or orange with navy lower body and cuffs, which hides dirt.
- Removable fleece or quilted liner for a 3-in-1 winter jacket.
- Radio loops, ID pockets and a mobile-phone chest pocket.
- Back print panel for the company name — kept clear of the tape.
- Matching rain trousers or bib overalls, such as our hi-vis bibs.

FAQ
What standard covers waterproof work jackets?
EN 343 covers protection against rain; EN ISO 20471 or ANSI/ISEA 107 cover visibility. A hi-vis rain jacket is usually tested to both.
Is a PU rain jacket breathable?
PU-coated fabric is waterproof but not very breathable. For all-day active work, a breathable membrane or laminate is better.
What is the minimum order for custom hi-vis rain jackets?
50 pieces per style at Blackthorn World.
How much do hi-vis rain jackets cost?
From about $15 per jacket FOB for a PU shell, more for breathable fabrics, liners and certified tape.
Can you add our company logo?
